One french fakir, Ben Ghou Bey, was invited to the laboratory of Dr. Wolfgang Larbig, to demonstrate his amazing abilities to his staff, to prove his authenticity the 48-year-old fakir picked up four un-sterilized metal spikes and thrust them into his abdomen, tongue and neck without bleeding. According to the report by Dr. Larbig published in the 1982, volume 53 edition of the periodical Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, the team stated that; ‘From all overt behavioral indicators, there was no evidence that he experienced any pain whatsoever.’ This particular state of mind does not have to be achieved through any form of hypnosis or by religious ecstasy but rather it was shown that he was able to induce a trance-like state just by concentrating on a fixed point above the eyebrows. After more than a half an hour with a blank face and staring eyes it was noted that he never blinked for more than 30 minutes.
His amazing abilities were further tested and compared with 14 of Dr. Larbig’s male volunteers. They were all placed in a dimly lit, sound proof, electrically shielded room and seated in a reclining chair, after connecting electrodes to various parts of their bodies, the ear lobes, fingers and above the eyes (only for recording purposes), another was attached to their leg to which the pain was administered.
They were all asked to prepare themselves in any way to cope with the pain that was being delivered in the form of strong electrical shocks presented simultaneously with an adverse noise. After receiving a total of 40 shocks they were released. What was revealed was that the still unblinking fakir held up the best and the recordings onto the EEG would further show his amazing level of mind over body.
The brain wave pattern of the fakir was very different than the other 14 volunteers. It was found that he exhibited a pattern of slow brain-frequencies of the theta band, normally associated with deep sleep. Furthermore it was shown that every time he felt pain he put that part of his brain asleep at will, producing slower and stronger theta waves when the pain was felt.
The conductivity of his skin was also found to be remarkably different than the others; undoubtedly it was proven then that through meditative type techniques he could have amazing control over mind and body and even more fantastic is the fact that he too could somehow control the bleeding. He also claimed other abilities such as being buried alive, to lie on a bed of nails and to be crucified for hours!
